Wissahickon Democrats:

Thank you so much for presenting me with one of your generous scholarships, The Wissahickon Democrats Good Citizenship Award, this year!

Next year, I will be attending The College of William & Mary and I plan on studying biology and kinesiology, with the intent of a career in the Allied Health field. In line with the nature of this award, I hope to someday give back to my community as a healthcare professional and provide care to a diverse group of people, even if that isn’t the Wissahickon community. I know that through my studies over the course of the next four years (and beyond!) I will be able to gain the knowledge required to make this dream a reality.

Thank you so much,
Elaina Bailey

2021 Co-Winner

I received the Wissahickon Democrats Good Citizenship Award, and I could not be more grateful.

I will be attending Cornell University in the fall as a Biology and Society major at the College of Arts and Sciences. In lieu with the spirit of this scholarship award, my future ambitions lie in wanting to create a more equitable and fair society for the human race. While I may not be able to make a great change on my own, I, nonetheless, want to contribute to the collective effort. In college, I hope to participate in biological research and build a foundation that will allow me to apply my knowledge to the multiple facets of human problems.

Thank you,
Sabrina Lin

I will be attending Montgomery County Community College in the fall and will be studying Criminal Justice. My post high school plans consist of mainly college, starting with Montco. After that I’m not sure where I may want to transfer to, but I will be transferring to finish my bachelors. I’ll most likely stay local like Temple or West Chester because they are close to home and I will always be able to see family at any time.

My overall goals in life are to just be successful and happy with my life. I feel that a career that you are interested in is part of what makes you happy and successful. For me, personally, I want to be a police officer. For sure, its not a job for everyone - for some people it's like any other job that they could have chosen. I like the idea of being a police officer because of the idea of helping people and really making a difference in your community. It’s one of those careers that people look for you to help them when in need. All in all, what I really want to achieve in life is making the community a better place.

Dear Wissahickon Democrats,

Thank you immensely for this scholarship. It means a lot to me to be recognized by a branch of the Democratic party. I am unsure as to what I wish to do as an adult, however I am sure that it will be internationally or politically oriented. Come fall I will be attending American University in DC, one of the most politically active campuses in the US, which contains a stellar School of International Service.

I intend on studying International Relations and History and I hope to serve our country overseas, perhaps in the state department. I eagerly await the elections, and to be able to cast my vote for the first time. OBAMA 2012!

Thank You,
Andrew Grafton

8th & 9th Recipients:

From Ms Ameija Sorg-Tayor:

Thank you Wissahickon Democrats for the Scholarship. I really appreciate it.

The Scholarship money is a lot of help for college. Once again, thank you so much.

Ameija attended Temple University.

From Mr. David Hooper:

My name is David Hooper, I've lived in Ambler and attended Wissahickon Schools all my life.

Academically, I have taken all Honors or Advanced Placement courses in my high school career and have been happy to achieve a high GPA while participating in many extracurricular activities. My favorite subjects were Computer Programming, Calculus, Chemistry and Physics. I am a member of the Wissahickon Chapter of the National Honor Society. In addition, I was a National Merit Commended Scholar and received the AP Scholar award for attaining the highest grade possible on all 3 AP tests that I took junior year.

Outside of class, I participated in numerous musical groups at the high school. I was a 3-year member of the concert band, the saxophone section leader in the 2 o'clock jazz band, and the pianist in the jazz combo. I have been a member of the concert chorus and Camerata (the high school's select choir) all four years of high school. I also participated in the men's choir, chamber singer octet, and barbershop quartet from sophomore year on. I was selected for the PMEA District 11 Chorus in 11th and 12th grade. Finally, I was a member of the spring musical in every year of my high school career, performing shows such as Evita and The Phantom of the Opera.

Out of school, my biggest accomplishments were the performances I did with the School of Rock All-Stars. The School of Rock All-Stars is a touring rock music group composed of 20 teenagers who play guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, or sing, and it has provided me with the most amazing musical experiences of my life. I am currently in my sixth year with the program, singing and playing keyboards and saxophone. I have performed at Lollapalooza, NAMM, and BB King’s in Times Square. In addition to that, the All-Star program has allowed me to perform with many famous musicians such as Jon Anderson of Yes, Perry Farrell of Jane’s Addiction, Leann Rimes, and many more. It has also granted me many chances for community service, the most recent of which was the Live Aid Remade Tour, where all of the proceeds went to the Haiti Relief Fund. On September 19, 2010, I was given the opportunity to perform for the United Nations Millennium Development Goals Scholarship Awards Ceremony at the Waldorf Astoria Grand Ballroom in New York City, playing “I Will Survive” with Gloria Gaynor, herself, playing in front of UN dignitaries and heads of state.

In the fall, I will be attending Brown University in Providence, RI. At the moment, I am considering a major in Computer Science, but I am looking forward to exploring the unique educational opportunities that Brown will provide me. I sincerely thank the members of the Wissahickon Democratic Committee for their generous award and for helping me pursue my dreams.

I'm looking forward to living up to the ideals of the scholarship.

Thank you very much!
