Spotlight on mail-in voting
Kudos to State Rep. Mary Jo Daley, who at a meeting of the Wissahickon Democratic Committee in the early spring of this year, gave her opinion that there were some loose ends in Act 77 that would require working out. Reminds me of an inventor, a contemporary of Thomas Edison, who would always say when he finished building something to the effect of, “Let’s start it up and see why it doesn’t work.” Pennsylvania started up mail-in balloting under the worst possible circumstances, and thanks to Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar, the state Supreme Court, and dedicated poll workers and voting officials, they made it work during a hotly contested election with massive turn out. Yes, the state legislature should address the defects stated in this article — put the fixes into law — but do in a bipartisan way.
Mail-in balloting is here to stay, and I wouldn’t want to be the legislators who try to kill it. Why do Republicans always seem to be trying to discourage voting? If they are true believers in the voice of the people, shouldn’t they be encouraging it?
